From Jeremy Affeldt's Twitter feed:
Just bought groceries at whole foods in Scottsdale. Did I buy produce or did I buy the farm that it came from! Organic is expensive!
Affeldt's made $9 million the last two years, and will make another $5 million this year. He knows that 46 million Americans are using food stamps to get by, and complaining about the price of groceries is poor form when you're a millionaire. Unless you're being ironic.

What he knows
I wonder if Affeldt really knows specifically that 46 million Americans are using food stamps, but I imagine you’re simply citing that fact to prove a point.
Still, organic food is significantly more expensive than non-organic. There’s a reason Whole Foods is nicknamed “Whole Wallet.” And many millionaires are known for being parsimonious.

Here we call it “Whole Paycheck,” but yeah.

Weak post
Having wealth does not make it immoral to comment on the prices in a grocery store, or to complain about being over charged.
What would you have him say?

Weak.
I would have him say, “Just got back from Whole Foods and I thank Jesus Christ that I’m healthy enough and talented to be able to afford the produce there without even thinking about how much money’s in my checking account.”

I traveled in India
Where the poorest American is wealthy by comparison. When a cab driver tried to rip me off I had no problem saying so, despite the fact that I was rich in that city.

Still Weak
Sorry, Rob, a ball-player making a comment on Whole Food’s prices isn’t a case for irony. I won’t begrudge anyone commenting on the prices of produce from that store regardless of how much the player earns or how many people are on food-stamps. And your lame comment above is pretty mean-spirited, I can see you rolling your eyes while writing it…or am I reading too much into it? See what I did there….

If you had told me that Jeremy Affeldt ironically tweeted about a trip to the grocery store,
I would’ve bet that it involved frozen hamburger patties.

This is just a really weird complaint
Especially because if he did the opposite – claiming that the high food cost was no big deal, it would actually seem more offensive to those with less money.

Rob, you need to re-analyze your perspective on this story
I believe it is actually a good thing that a multi-millionaire still has enough of a grip in reality to realize the value of a dollar and to make a comment like this, at least he still grocery shops, hell, many in his position have staff hired to do that stuff. Now, if he complained about the amount of taxes he pays per year on his fortune, that would be poor form.

The other aspect of Affeldt
Aside from the tweet, I would like to point out that Affeldt is actually known for his philanthropic efforts on several different issues, one of which being hunger. You can read a recent article from MLB.com about that here. I think that jumping on Affeldt for that tweet is unfair and misguided, honestly.

Swing and a miss, Rob.
Of all the players to go after for being out of touch, you go after one who in December spearheaded a school program that packaged 130,000 meals and shipped them off to poor villages in Africa. He’s one of the more outspoken voices in the baseball community on matters of charity, and is extremely active in campaigning against human trafficking.
I’m going to hazard a guess and say that Jeremy has done more for his community, particularly for the poor and vulnerable, than you ever have. So you might want to chiggegy-check yourself before you wreck yourself. Though Jeremy is probably too nice to say that to your face.
I suggest you do your homework and go read up on Generation Alive and the Not For Sale Campaign before you see fit to pass judgment.

I believe he works with a third organization as well to provide clean drinking water in third world countries as well, though I can’t remember the name off the top of my head.

Yeah but I bet he bought all 135,000 of those meals from Whole Foods and complained about each and every one.
The first six innings are overrated.

Hey, give Neyer a break.
He obviously had nothing better to do like, say, write a column that required some thought or research.
Seriously, Rob, this was really dumb and makes it seem like you don’t know anything about the players you write about. Kind of like you still worked at ESPN or something.

Yes
with all the insufferable jackhole athletes detailed every day across SBN sites, make fun of one of the most philanthropic players of them all. Do they take food stamps at the locally-sourced hipster co-op where you shop?
