Athletics Extend Billy Beane Through 2019

Feb 7, 2012 - Over the last few months, there have been rumors that Oakland A's GM Billy Beane would leave the team, in part due to frustration over the delays regarding the club's possible move to San Jose. He was linked for a time in connection with the job with the Cubs that eventually went to Theo Epstein.

Tuesday, both Beane and team president Michael Crowley got contract extensions, according to Jon Erlichman of Bloomberg Television:

#Exclusive: A's Lew Wolff tells me he's extending contracts of Beane, Crowley to '19 b/c "I view them as partners as well as execs"

2019? Is that even a real year? Let's see, carry the two... that's seven years from now. In late December, reports were that the A's proposed move to San Jose was going to be announced sometime in February.

There are 22 days left in February, so they still have time. Seven years beyond that will give Crowley and Beane plenty of time to build the franchise back into the winner it was during the early 2000s.

First, Brad Pitt

Pitt played Beane in “Moneyball,” and now Billy Bob Thornton is sitting in for him in meetings with reporters? I mean, that’s Thornton in tha pic, isn’t it?

Replacement Level Angelina Jolie Husbands are all pretty interchangable

For all we know she’s really been married to Beane the whole time (and quietly monopolizing the overlooked international adoption market as the new long-term inefficiency)

The distraction of Jolie

At least that would explain Beane’s moves this winter.

indeed

And let’s not forget Lew Wolff:

“I think it would be fun”…on the potential decision to sign currently retired 40 year old, 2 time suspended and .059 hitting (in 2010) Manny Ramirez, after already trading away every player that can possibly help you over the next two years (at least). But this isn’t a marketing decision. Ahem.

“I said that he couldn’t retire until I expire”-Lew Wolff on Bud Selig. I’d say that, too, if I ran my franchise into the ground in the name of not having a new stadium and crying “small market” enough times. What NEW commissioner would put up with that kind of performance? And now we have a GM with the longest guaranteed tenure for a team that won’t even sign a decent PLAYER to a multi-year deal?

Sorry A’s fans. Seriously. After watching this team in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I hate to see what’s happening here.

How was he supposed to manage a team with a 1-year contract?

Not a lot of faith there. Even Art Howe had a 2-year contract in 2002.

That’s a lot of faith you’re showing there, considering what’s happened the PREVIOUS seven years. Ok, that’s not entirely fair- it’s five years. But it’ll be seven by the time this thing even starts turning around. At least. I’m sure it’s not all Billy Beane’s fault what’s happened lately. Heck, maybe it isn’t even PARTLY his fault (though I think that’d be going way too far, but I digress). But to sign a GM to an eight year extension after what’s happened with this team the past few years…I’m not sure anyone other than Billy Beane could have that kind of fortune. Then again, I don’t know what other GM besided Billy Beane could have the kind of fortune to be portrayed by Brad Pitt.
