Former Major Leaguer Danny Clyburn Shot And Killed

Danny Clyburn, a major league player briefly in the late 1990s, was shot in his South Carolina hometown early Tuesday.

Feb 7, 2012 - Danny Clyburn, a native of Lancaster, South Carolina, was the second-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1992 draft.

Early Tuesday, he was shot and killed in Lancaster, according to the Rock Hill (S.C.) Herald:

Witnesses told police that a man was arguing with Clyburn just moments before he was shot.

Derrick Lamont Mcilwain, 36, of Lancaster, has been arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Mcilwain turned himself in to authorities early Tuesday, police said, and he is in the detention center awaiting a bond hearing.

Clyburn's career didn't take the route his high draft status might have indicated. Though he had some good power years in the minors -- hitting 159 career minor league home runs -- he was traded three times, to the Reds, Orioles and then Devil Rays and wound up playing just 41 major league games for Baltimore and Tampa Bay, hitting .211 with four home runs.

The article quotes Clyburn's father, Danny Sr., and the way he'd like his son to be remembered:

"He was a good son," he said. "He tried hard to stay on top, always tried. He worked hard in baseball."
