Feb 6, 2012 - According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Chicago Cubs have designated Blake DeWitt for assignment, presumably to clear a space on the 40 man-roster for recently acquired Adrian Cardenas.
DeWitt still only 26, but his career's already had its share of plot twists. The Dodgers' first-round draft pick in 2004, four seasons later DeWitt was thrust into regular duties with the big club when third baseman Casey Blake got hurt, and DeWitt wound up playing a key role in the Dodgers' division-winning season.
But he got off to a lousy start in 2009 and wound up spending most of that season in the minors.
Back up in 2010, DeWitt served as the Dodgers' regular second baseman until the end of July, when a deadline trade sent him to the Cubs. Last season, DeWitt played some second and third base and even some left field, but also got into 69 games as a pinch-hitter ... and batted just .219 in that role.
DeWitt doesn't really have a position and his left-handed bat isn't productive at all. But he does have a left-handed bat and he can play a few positions, so should find some work doing roughly what he did in 2012 as a Cub.

Casey Blake DeWitt
I always thought Casey Blake was the last remaining House of David barnstormer, but if you combine him with Blake DeWitt, the resultant Casey Blake DeWitt and their combined beard would undoubtedly be a most powerful House Of David player.
