Ryan Vogelsong Injury: Strained Back Limits Giants Right-Hander

Feb 19, 2012 - Remember Ryan Vogelsong, who came out of nowhere to go 13-7 with a 2.71 ERA with the Giants last season? Well, spring training's barely started and he's hurt. MLB.com's Chris Haft:

Already burdened with multiple injury-related concerns, the Giants were saddled with another one when right-hander Ryan Vogelsong revealed Sunday that he will miss at least the first 10 days of Spring Training with a strained back.

--snip--

Vogelsong, 34, said that he hurt himself while squatting on a balance ball and lifting 70-pound dumbbells -- a weight he had consistently lifted -- on Feb. 7.

Ten isn't really a big deal in the middle of February. But if 10 days turns into 15 into 20, now you're looking at the possibility that Vogelsong won't be ready to slot in as the Giants' No. 4 starter in early April.

Which, again, isn't really a big deal as long as he gets into action before long. But Vogelsong's coming off one of the more miraculous seasons in memory, and this injury merely reminds how difficult a repeat performance will be.
