Jan 6, 2012 - There's no getting around it: Adam Jones has been a disappointment. Not a bust, really. But a .275/.319/.437 career line in the majors just isn't what we expected from the guy who dominated the Pacific Coast League when he was only 21. After that season (2007), Jones would have ranked among the 10 hottest properties in baseball.
But it just hasn't happened yet. The Mariners gave up on him after just a very brief trial in the majors, including him in a large package of prospects (including Chris Tillman) that brought Erik Bedard to Seattle.
Granted, the deal's worked out wonderfully for the Orioles, as Bedard's spent most of the last four seasons just trying to stay healthy. And in 2009, Jones actually made the American League All-Star team. But he simply isn't the big star the Orioles undoubtedly thought they were getting.
There's been a great deal of talk this winter about Adam Jones becoming an Atlanta Brave. Names have been floated and everything. Jair Jurrjens. Martín Prado. Pretty good players, already. For his part, Prado's just two years older than Jones, has better career statistics, and is more versatile.
Still, the Orioles -- and new general manager Dan Duquette -- have reportedly spurned such a package.
Why? FanGraphs' Dave Cameron looked at young players who swung at a lot of pitches and had at least a modicum of power. What he found was a bunch of guys who eventually learned to stop swinging at so many bad pitches and became outstanding hitters. Not all of them, by any means. But a significant number of them.
Cameron:
When the Orioles look at Adam Jones, they’re not looking at a +2 to +3 win guy with a low OBP who needs work judging balls off the bat – they’re looking at a guy with the potential to become a premium player at an up-the-middle position. And if they’re going to give up that potential, they’re going to need to get some serious upside in return.
--snip--
You can’t judge Adam Jones’ value to the Orioles by what he’s been to date. His value is based on what he could be, and what he could be is worth a lot more than Martin Prado and Jair Jurrjens.
I like Jurrjens, but he's managed only 43 starts in the last two seasons. I like Prado, but he's two years older than Jones. I think if the Orioles are going to trade the guy, they should get someone like ... well, someone like Adam Jones was, four years ago.

Everybody believes there players are going to get better
You don’t think atlanta is saying jurrens can be better and trading him for the potential he has.

Well when you see the haul that Latos got
Atlanta would be foolish to not take offers.

Jurrjens, Prado, and a pitching prospect is too much
Like you said, Prado is a comparable hitter and offers much more versatility than Jones. I don’t like Jurrjens going forward, but the Braves need those two more than they would need Adam Jones. First off, Jones would be in LF in 2012 if this trade happened. His bat wouldn’t play as well there and I’m not sure he’d be an upgrade over Prado.
It’s just not a match for either club, really.

Yea I agree
Jones had one decent year. Maybe he hasn’t been dealt yet is because he’s overrated and other teams see that. No way Baltimore rejected that trade. I wouldn’t trade Jurrjens straight up for Jones.

Why The O's Haven't Traded Adam Jones
Because they can’t!

the free-swinging CF
Before age 26: .283/.334/.432
Career at age 31: .275/.323/.434
The Alex Rios comparisons would be terrifying, only if Jones struck out less and stole more bases.
Here’s to hoping!

Look at this for a second...
Imagine Jones’ value to the Orioles. He’s their starting CF, and a reliable man and arguably the best player the Orioles have right now. Now, imagine Prado’s value and Jurrjens’ value to the Orioles. Those two players are automatically starters for the O’s, and Jurrjens becomes their go-to guy and perhaps their ace. Now, do you see why the Braves didn’t want to throw in, not just another guy, but one of our top 4 pitching prospects who could become the O’s ace someday? That’s simply too much for the Braves to give up for too little.

If Jones “could be” so much then he would have teams knocking down doors for him. For a guy who has been in the league for 4 full seasons and parts of 2 others, it is time to judge him on what he has been. Jurrjens and Prado is way too much for a guy that’ been disappointing in his major league tenure.

Adam Jones
No way is Adam Jones a disappointment to the Orioles! I am appalled at the mere suggestion! There is no way to measure his value to the Orioles, we has Oriole fans love him! He is an amazing guy on and off the field and I personally would not trust anyone else in Centerfield more then Adam Jones. This article is just a bunch of B.S. and totally untrue! I stand behind Adam Jones and the Orioles no matter what. This article makes me sick!

He can go get it, right?
by JulioBernazard on Jan 7, 2012 9:13 PM EST up reply actions
Absolutely
Jones is very agressive in the field as well as making the batter work for a good hit. He’s also out there to take away homeruns!-Great to watch play.

Trading Adam Jones
The Orioles should try to trade Jones for A.J. Cole of the Nationals.
