Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals Agree To Big Contract Extension

Less than a month after trading for Gio Gonzalez, the Nationals gave their new starter a new deal worth a lot of money.

Jan 15, 2012 - The Nationals gave up four good prospects to add Gio Gonzalez to their rotation, and now Washington has signed the left-handed starter to a contract extension that could keep him in a Nats uniform through 2018.

Gonzalez agreed to a five-year, $42 million contract three weeks after arriving in Washington. He made $420,000 last season and is likely a very happy person right now. The contract buys out one year of free agency, and includes 2017 and 2018 club options.

Washington acquired Gonzalez from the Athletics in exchange for a package of four prospects: A.J. Cole, Brad Peacock, Derek Norris, and Tommy Milone.

In 2011, Gonzalez went 16-12 with a 3.12 ERA in 32 starts and 202 innings pitched and represented the A's in the All-Star game. He will join Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmerman atop what's rounding into a fine little rotation in Washington.

Gonzalez has already made himself home within the Washington organization. He's starting pitcher and assistant GM:

Is Gio aware that the U.S. is not a monarchy?

Some people get so rich they lose all respect for humanity. That's how rich I want to be.

Expectations

Gio pitched great last year: 130 ERA+ and 106 P/GS. Those are the big numbers. Durable. He also had a 1.317 WHIP and walks batters and everyone knows he led the AL in that category last year. I am hoping for less BBs—he’s not going to have an another 120+ ERA+ if he walks the Braves, Phillies, and Marlins. Still, it was a monumental acquisition!
Now, let’s just not thinks back to my Senators teams from 1961-1971! You know who won the most games in a single season for the Senators? Dick Bosman with 16 in 1970 and Claude Osteen with 15 in 1963!

I guess if you're gonna give up four good prospects for a guy

you might as well go all in on his future?

Based on his last two years of work, not a bad guy to bet on IMO.

Guess we’ll see how it works out.
