Bartolo Colon Signs With Mystery Team

Jan 15, 2012 - I was about to write "40-year-old Bartolo Colon", because he seems that old, but that isn't right -- Colon is 38 and won't turn 39 until May.

On Saturday, USA Today's Bob Nightengale tweeted that Colon had signed. There's a caveat:

Barolo Colon says he has agreed to a deal with a team but won't divulge te until he passes physical #mlb

Colon had a pretty good year for the Yankees in 2011 after missing the entire 2010 season. He posted a 4.00 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 111 ERA+ over 29 appearances (26 starts). Could this "mystery team" be the Yankees? Maybe, but Jayson Stark had tweeted on Friday that the Diamondbacks were interested, and on Saturday, Buster Olney tweeted:

Oakland Athletics are in negotiations with Bartolo Colon.

A few hours after the Olney tweet, this one from Jon Heyman narrowed it down:

Bartolo colon has a deal. It's apparently not dbacks or yanks. A's were among other teams interested. No confirmation.

So it would appear that Oakland is his likely destination. It's all pending a physical; Colon got hitters out in 2011 despite being in, um, not optimal physical condition. Colon wasn't even close to being the oldest player in the AL last season; there were at least 10 who were older. Although the A's are going young, for the most part, it's not likely Colon will cost them that much for a one-year deal to solidify a young pitching staff.

New York has nicer restaurants

But Arizona has better BBQ. Which does Bartolo prefer?

All cuisine just ends up

mixed up in the colon, in the end

SF Giants' record in the eleven-year twenty-first century/Pac Bell era: five MVPs, two CYA, one ROY, the two highest single-season OPS of all time (and two of the other top eight), the single-season and all-time HR records, two NL Pennants, and ... one World Championship

Did the A's need another starter?

Did we have extra innings that needed to be eaten? I guess you can’t count on Braden or McCarthy to last a full season. That leaves Moscoso, Outman…Anderson will miss the year…holy crap, we DID need another starter. I hadn’t even realized. Among prospects, Milone is probably closest, and Gray and Parker might have a chance to reach the Majors in 2012, but it would be better if the latter two didn’t have to make the jump until next year.

OK, fine, I’m ok with this signing. I’d rather have gone after Oswalt, but Colon was probably cheaper (maybe we’ll get both?). I’ve never liked Colon. I suspect I will learn to like him now.

1. Colon
2. McCarthy
3. Moscoso
4. Braden
5. Outman
—with a bunch of prospects to take over when just about all of those guys miss time over the course of the season. Wow, this year is going to SUCK.

Not bad . . . What's in store?

Colon had a 1.290 WHIP in 164 IP last year and was at the league average in 5.9 IP/GS and a 51 GS (game score). If he can put up numbers like that again (and I mean league averages), you can’t complain about the signing! Of course, I’d be amazed if he does, though Fan Graphs and Bill James have predictions at 150-165 IP and any Athletics fan would be ecstatic with that!
