Meditations On The Stretch Run

Meditations on the Stretch Run

The air, crisper
The sun, lower in the sky
The grass, a bit more worn, a bit less green

The mound, raked and raked again
The infield and the track, too
The lines painted and re-painted
Home plate brushed clean for the thousandth time

The yard looks evermore beautiful
To young and old
The yard looks evermore beautiful

September baseball

Call-ups on their way up
To sit
To run
To hit in a pinch
To shine
To fail
To be back down again

Vets on their way out
Winners on their way in
Free agents on their way
The yard looks evermore beautiful

The games have more meaning
Or they have none at all

September baseball

The yard looks evermore beautiful
The yard looks beautiful, evermore
