Red Sox vs. Mariners: Seattle Relevant In July For All The Wrong Reasons

The Seattle Mariners lost their 15th consecutive game Sunday night, a 12-8 decision to the Boston Red Sox.

Coming off a season that saw the team lose 100+ games, Mariner fans were excited early in the 2011 season to see the team remain competitive. So much so that there were questions as to whether or not the team should trade any talent in case they find themselves in a pennant race come September. Most of all, however, the fans were just excited to still be relevant in June and hoped to remain at the forefront of baseball discussion come July.

As Lookout Landing posits, be careful what you wish for...

It's been joked about before that, if a team can't be good, it should be exceptionally bad, and while that doesn't always apply or even often apply, it does apply to the current situation, because the Mariners are still on the forefront of our minds. That's all we can really ask of a sports team, so kudos to the Mariners for delivering into at least the end of July. Attention will wane once the losing streak is over and the team achieves a more normal brand of lousy baseball, but then, who knows when the losing streak's going to end, with the Yankees and Rays coming up? I know I'll be watching closely, and I know you will, too.

Keep an eye on Lookout Landing for more miserable Mariner baseball.

Red Sox Hand Mariners 15th-Straight Loss

Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford each posted three hits, two RBI and two runs scored as the Boston Red Sox handed the Seattle Mariners their franchise-worst 15th straight defeat with a 12-8 decision to sweep a three-game series at Fenway Park.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia collected three hits and drove in four while Kevin Youkilis added a two-run homer for the Red Sox, who have won seven of their last eight games.

Dustin Pedroia extended his career-best hit streak to 21 games with a double in the sixth.

Veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (6-3) tallied his 2,000th Red Sox strikeout and recorded his 199th career victory on Sunday, but it came the hard way.

The right-hander was pulled after allowing a seventh-inning grand slam to Brendan Ryan. His line eventually showed 6-1/3 innings, 10 hits and seven runs allowed while fanning four -- the final victim Mariners left fielder Mike Carp, to reach the plateau and end the sixth.

Ryan drove in five runs and Miguel Olivo added a two-run homer for the Mariners, who surpassed the old franchise record for futility at 14 games, originally set from September 2 through 18, 1992.
