Red Sox Vs. Mariners Score: Seattle's Streak Continues With 3-1 Loss To Boston

For a moment, it seemed as though the Seattle Mariners losing streak would finally come to an end. Mike Carp hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to break the scoreless tie between the Mariners and Boston Red Sox on Saturday night as the team flirting with futility showed some signs of life at Fenway. But the moment was fleeting as the Red Sox immediately answered, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a lead they wouldn't surrender.

Boston did its damage with two outs in the bottom of the seventh after Blake Beaven retired Carl Crawford and Josh Reddick in order. Jason Varitek singled, Marco Scutaro hit a ground rule double to right and Jacoby Ellsbury brought them both home with a single back up the middle to give the Red Sox a 2-1 lead just moments after Carp's home run. Ellsbury added an insurance run on an Aaron Laffey wild pitch and the Mariners 1-0 lead turned into a 3-1 deficit in the blink of an eye.

The Mariners weren't short on chances, but were done in again by a punchless offense. In the top half of the eighth, Seattle loaded the bases with nobody out, only to come away empty-handed. Daniel Bard wiggled his way out of the jam unscathed with a short flyout to left, a strikeout and a weak grounder to third to end the inning.

Josh Beckett pitched seven innings for the Red Sox, allowing one run on seven hits in the win. Jonathan Papelbon slammed the door in the ninth, allowing a leadoff single before retiring the next three batters he faced. Blake Beavan was tagged with the loss after pitching 6-2/3 innings and allowing three runs.

The loss was the Mariners' 14th in a row in a streak that's seemed to stretch forever. The current streak ties a club record for consecutive loss, set by the 1992 Mariners. Seattle goes for history on Sunday against the Red Sox at 1:35 p.m. EDT.
