2011 MLB Draft Tracker: Giants Snag Infielder Panik

29. San Francisco Giants: Joe Panik, SS, St. John's University

You like stats? Check this out. Panik hit .398/.509/.642 this year with 44 walks and 21 steals for the Red Storm. You want tools? Panik isn't the best athlete in the universe but he isn't a bad one either, and makes the most out of his tools with amazing baseball instincts.

He should have at least gap power in the pros, and his combination of plate discipline and ability on the bases will make him an asset at the top of the order. Although some scouts believe he'll have to move to second base due to his arm strength, but others believe his positioning and instincts are good enough to keep him at shortstop. Either way, his makeup is outstanding, and he has already proven himself with wooden bats in the Cape Cod League.

Panik has a lot of polish and shouldn't need an excessive amount of time in the minors.

He seems like a great sleeper pick to me

The Giants will be needing a “new Freddy Sanchez” in the next few years. This guy doesn’t seem like a reach to me, when you consider that, although it does perhaps go against the BPA approach that the Giants continually espouse.

If you look at Perfect Game's draft profile

He was drafted exactly where they thought he would be. They even thought he might get called before Wong, among MIs. That’s pretty much BPA, particularly if you consider that the Giants have seemed to value “baseball aptitude” as another “tool” to evaluate players by.

John also noted in his sleepers article, in the comments, that Panik is not that much of an overdraft versus where he was on John’s draft board, and the pick makes sense if you don’t think he will last to Giants #49 pick. And given the lack of college MIs, that looks logical.
