Kerry Wood Injury: Cubs Righthander To DL With Blister
Cubs righthander Kerry Wood, who has been a solid setup man for the team this year, is headed to the 15-day disabled list, tweets MLB.com's Carrie Muskat.
Wood has been bothered by blisters on his pitching hand, and it got worse this past weekend while he was warming up in hot and humid conditions in Philadelphia. Wood appeared in the first game of the Cubs' four-game series with the Phillies, warmed up for other games but has not appeared since June 9, so the DL stint is retroactive to then.
Wood has had this problem in the past -- he spent a month on the DL for the same issue while he was the Cubs' closer in 2008. For those of you who think "Blisters? What's the problem? Just go to your local pharmacy and get some Neosporin!", blisters can be a serious issue for a pitcher; a blister can make it much more difficult to grip the ball, and can be extremely painful upon rupturing.
The Cubs activated infielder Jeff Baker from the DL to take Wood's place on the 25-man roster. Casey Coleman had been recalled last week when the Cubs DFA'd Brad Snyder to give the Cubs 13 pitchers; this move returns the team to a more "normal" 12-man staff.
