Orlando Hudson Injury: Groin Strain Sends Infielder Back To DL

Back in the early part of the month, Padres second baseman Orlando Hudson went on the disabled list with a hamstring strain. He missed the minimum amount of time and returned to play on Thursday, May 19. However, on Wednesday, May 25, he had to come out of a game with what looked to be an aggravation of the hamstring injury. It turns out that Hudson actually strained his groin, and not his hamstring, but that groin strain is still sending him back to the DL.

In Hudson's place, the Padres have again recalled infielder Logan Forsythe. Forsythe has posted an .848 OPS with AAA Tucson, but it's expected that the second base gig will be split between Eric Patterson and Alberto Gonzalez, just as it was the last time Hudson needed a break.

Hudson's sitting on a miserable .604 OPS, and though he isn't that bad of a hitter, he now won't get a chance to improve his numbers until the middle of June, at the soonest.

The Padres won their game against the Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon, but they might well have lost their second baseman ... again. From Bill Center (via Sign On San Diego):

Just seven games back from the disabled list, Orlando Hudson suffered a left groin injury Wednesday afternoon while running out a seventh-inning infield single.

How bad is the second baseman injured?

"No questions today," said Hudson as he dressed. "No questions."

Sheesh, what a grouch.

You can understand Hudson's frustration, though. His infield single -- the one that got him hurt -- was just his second hit in 21 at-bats since coming off the DL, and now he's looking at carrying a .217 batting average into June.

When Hudson was out before, second base was manned by Alberto Gonzalez and Eric Patterson, both of whom are somehow hitting less than .217 ... and it's not like either are hitting oodles of home runs, either. But there's really nobody else available, so it looks like more Gonzatterson for a couple of weeks unless Hudson's hammy is in better shape than his mood.
