Dec 8, 2011 - According to Troy Renck, who covers the Colorado Rockies like nobody's business, third baseman Ian Stewart has been traded to the Chicago Cubs. And not just Ian Stewart! The Cubs also got a 26-year-old pitcher who walked 9.5 batters per nine innings in Class AA last year!
Hey, maybe TheoJed can find a delivery in Casey Weathers' flaw.
Meanwhile, the Rockies get outfielder Tyler Colvin and infielder DJ LeMahieu.
Stewart's presumably going to get a shot at winning the every-day job at third base with the Cubs, which would make for a nice comeback story, considering that last season Stewart was on the DL seventeen times and batted .037 with negative-six RBIs when he did play for the Rockies.
But we'll bet the Cubs know that Stewart raked in the minors. And we'll double-bet that he's going to be 27 next season, and probably has at least one more good season in him.

Not sure about the Cubs guys
But Stewart, if nothing else, needs a change of scenery. Yes, he still has a ton of potential, but he’s been riding on it without delivering since 2008.
Weathers? He’s been obligatorily deemed a top prospect in the system because he was drafted 8th overall in 2007 but has yet to transfer that potential to results. Again, a change of scenery will (hopefully) do wonders for the kid.

I don't mind the trade but...
LeMahieu is a good young talent. I think he’s going to surprise people.

.224
That was Ian Stewart’s BABIP last year.
The Cubs just made out like bandits. Theo knows what he’s doing. They just got Dejesus and they don’t need Colvin anymore, a corner outfielder with a .274 career OBP. They do, however, need a 3Bman, and Ian Stewart was a reliable 1+ win player with a .323 /.428 career line at a position that doesn’t have the kind of heavy hitters it used to.
