SB Nation 2011-2012 MLB Free Agents

MLB Free-Agent Tracker: Who They Are, Where They're Going

Who's currently a major-league free agent? Where are the signed free agents going to play next season? We've got your details, updating as necessary.

Nov 9, 2011 - Hello there, and welcome to Baseball Nation's 2011-2012 MLB Free Agent Tracker. If you're reading this, it's because you're wondering about the current free agent market, or because you accidentally clicked on the really annoying Baseball Nation 2011-2012 MLB Free Agent Tracker pop-up window that I've been promised the tech guys are going to implement. Traffic, so much traffic!

Below, you will find a simple, sortable table. The table includes the names of all the major league free agents, or at least almost all of them. (If we've left any out, please let us know.) The table also includes each free agent's position or positions, and, if the free agent has signed, contract details and a link to further coverage. The links in the player names will send you to stats and coverage. We've tried hard to make the positions accurate, but that's complicated by the fact that a lot of guys play in more than one place. So.

Note that, in addition to major league free agents, there are also minor league free agents. Baseball America has a super awesome minor league free agent tracker for you to mess around with at your leisure. We, uh, won't try to compete with that.

So, off we go. We will update this tracker as news happens. Click column headers to sort, and a * after the team indicates the player has re-signed with his last 2011 club.

This is so simple

And so awesome. Hello new permanent tab.

My NBA team got stolen so now I settle for rooting against Kobe.

Comments?

Can you make the comments sortable too? I really want to see this one drop to the bottom.

I predict Fernando Rodney will sign a contract with the Seattle Mariners.

Napoli's 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th homers of the year (four more than Jeff Mathis' career total) rained down on Angel Stadium like knives from the ceiling.

I like that it is sortable but when your mouse hovers over the column heading it should probably be set to ‘pointer’.

I'm confused...

So which of these free agents are hot, and which are not?

And how am I supposed to know which may have been tainted by Brett Tomko? Not even literally with his taint, necessarily. Figuratively with his taint is just as bad.

Once more, coming to you by proxy.

Small error

I hate to be the dickhead who just points out flaws in this otherwise awesome table, but there is an error in the sortability. If you sort by money, it arranges them sequentially by the first number. For example, right now, the top four dollar values are, in order,

$8.5M
$7M
$50M
$4M

It’s counting the “50” as a “number starting with 5” rather than a “number bigger than 8.”

Otherwise, this is totally sweet and I will be visiting it frequently.

nice!

the table might be a litttle hard to read but other than that good!

Cool

A “former team” column might be kinda neat.

The Arizona Diamondbacks

Will spend approximately $20M over the next two years on, arguably, the four worst hitters with regular gigs in MLB.

This strikes me as a less-than-optimal strategy.

Isn't Russell Branyan a free agent now?

Seems more logical if the names were to sort by last name.

Feels weird looking up a guy on the list by his first name.

But you get used to it, so probably not worth the trouble of retyping them all.
