New Miami Marlins Logo, Uniforms Officially Unveiled

After months of guesses and speculation, the Miami Marlins officially unveiled their new logo and uniforms in a private ceremony.

Nov 11, 2011 - Friday night, during a private ceremony broadcast to the world over the internet, the Florida Marlins officially became the Miami Marlins. But then, we all saw the name change coming miles and miles away, and what we were most interested in was the big reveal of the Marlins' new logo and uniforms. There had been alleged leaks, and there had been speculation - so much speculation - but only during the ceremony would we finally find out what the new Marlins would look like for sure.

Everything was shrouded in secrecy as those of us watching on the internet waited for the ceremony to begin.

At last, it began, and after a short speech, Jeffrey Loria unveiled the Marlins' new logo:

Just like the leaks. I can't tell if this logo isn't actually that bad, or if I've just gotten used to it since I've been seeing it for almost two months. Loria described the Marlins' new look as "unique, sleek and different," and said that the team would be wearing the "colors of Miami". Sunsets and beaches and everything.

After the logo, it was time for the players to model the new uniforms. Here's an overall look, from the Marlins' Twitter account:

And now to break it all down bit by bit, we go to the Marlins' official team store.

Look - I know we've all been prepared for the Marlins to look like absolute shit. It's maybe because of that preparation that I think these look all right. In the image posted above, even the orange alternate looks sharp and perfectly wearable. I'm not wild about the idea of, say, pairing it with the orange hat, but I'll worry about that if and when I actually see it. (I won't actually worry.) (So don't worry.)

The jerseys are colorful, and different, and different in a way that I like. When the Padres revealed their updated jerseys the other day, there was some criticism that they went too bland, and look too much like the Brewers. The Marlins won't really look like anybody else, and I don't mean that as a criticism. The Marlins definitely have their own look.

Oh, by the way, before I forget, some of the backs:

Pmlb2-11660123t130_medium

Pmlb2-11660487t130_medium

I dig the teal shadow on the alternate. I have never claimed to have fantastic taste in anything, but I'm okay with what I'm okay with. I'm okay with this.

You, of course, are free to disagree with my assessments, because our opinions are our opinions and when it comes to something like a team's logo and uniforms, I don't think there's any right or wrong. If I like this stuff, and you hate this stuff, I am right and you are right. That's the way this works. There are going to be tons of people who blast the Marlins from here to Bangkok for what they've done to themselves. Some of those people are just going to be upset because something changed, but many of those people are going to express opinions that are perfectly legitimate.

But at least it's all done now. It's all official. No more projections, no more guesswork. We know what the Miami Marlins are going to look like. It's time to get used to it.

And maybe buy a t-shirt!

I agree with what Grant said.

I like the home whites, especially.

The only think I really don’t care for is the three-colored M in the logo. But I do appreciate that the Marlins aren’t just red and blue like too many teams.

Oh, I do hate the black jerseys. I hate all black jerseys. If I were Commissioner, I would ban black jerseys. Day 1.

Give them credit for being unique

Like you said, it seems like 80% of the league features some clever combination of red/blue.

I think Jeff is right, too. We all expected everything to be terrible and so when we saw these on human persons, they didn’t come off as totally horrendous.

Now about that item under construction in centerfield….

Oh, and Rob: why the hatred for black jerseys? The Rockies black vests are not only the only passable vests in baseball, but they make the black look good (admitted bias).

Weird

… the team has the city name on their home uniform instead of the team name. I can’t think of any other MLB team that has done this.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that.

I thought it was unique. I guess they’re driving home the fact that they’re “Miami” now. Whatever the case, I do kinda dig these duds.

Seems like more teams in other sports are starting to do it, like the Dallas Stars in the NHL, who removed the old logo on their home jerseys and now just have “DALLAS” across the front.

Then again, we’re talking about Texas, where no normal rules apply, so I have no explanation for this from the Marlins.

Texas

While Texas is not a city, the Texas Rangers do not have a single uni in which the team name appears on front. All four have “TEXAS”.

san diego

has (or had) a road jersey that says “san diego”. of course, since san diego has an A.D.D.-ish approach to uniforms.

What about the Yankees? It doesn’t say “Yankees” on their home whites…

Not that bad!

I actually like them, but agree that black jerseys should be banned.

Man, I hate the logo.

The jersey designs, the colors, all that I’m ok with. But the new logo itself, and the color overload, those I definitely don’t dig.

Hate that logo with the off center marlin

but the jerseys are ok. I like the lettering and number on the back, and the rest is acceptable. Somewhat surprisingly.

The blue marlin

On the orange jersey looks insanely better than the orange marlin on all the others. Also, it looks really strange when the color configuration is mismatched from jersey to hat, i.e. the orange marlin on the hat but the blue marlin on the jersey.

In fact

The marlins website uses the blue marlin as the primary header logo:

Now if only it could be blue on all the jerseys.

All's okay

Maybe it’s because I came of age in the 1970s, the decade of the worst uniforms ever, but the new-look Marlins uniforms don’t bother me at all. I can do without the orange alternative jersey, but I’ll reserve judgement until I actually see the orange in action.

The media “outrage” over these uniforms in the recent weeks has been a bit crazy. They’re fine.

The colours look better from a distance.

The shark-tooth-swoosh is kind of silly though, it looks like a Fourier transform being flushed down the toilet.

It doesn’t look good. That said, in a few years it might develop into a reasonably decent uniform. That bright orange has to be toned down, a lot. If they ditched the orange road hat and all of the alternate jerseys, and just went with the black hat with the white home and gray road jerseys, I think it would look pretty decent.

Reminds me a lot of the Tampa Bay Not-Devil Rays moving to their own “sunnier” uniforms. Miami’s uniforms aren’t as generic as Tampa’s, fortunately, but Tampa’s aren’t as hard on the eyes as that bright orange stuff.

The logo is fine, and I’m hoping that they’ll move away from the halloween colors and back toward the teal over the next few years. The orange isn’t a bad idea in small doses, but there’s just too much of it.
