The Cardinals Should Give A Postseason Share To Carlos Marmol

Oct 17, 2011 - The St. Louis Cardinals are in their third World Series in the last eight years. That's impressive; no other team in baseball has been in that many Fall Classics in that span.

But did you know that without the Chicago Cubs -- and in particular, Cubs pitcher Carlos Marmol -- the Cardinals wouldn't have even made the postseason?

Here's a tale of two regular season games that literally turned on one pitch.

On June 5 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the Cubs took a 2-0 lead off Chris Carpenter in the fourth inning. Carlos Zambrano gave up a run to the Cardinals in the sixth, but both teams' bullpens held the other squad in check until the ninth, when Marmol came in for a save opportunity with that 2-1 lead.

Marmol, who was dominant in 2010 -- he struck out 41.5% of all batters he faced that year -- had been somewhat shaky in the early going in 2011. But on that June day, he gave up a single to Yadier Molina (who was then replaced by pinch runner Tony Cruz) and then struck out Daniel Descalso and Colby Rasmus.

That put Marmol's former teammate Ryan Theriot between Marmol and victory. Marmol threw Theriot two fastballs, which he fouled off. One strike to victory.

And then Marmol decided to get cute. He threw a slider out of the zone and a changeup out of the zone.

It was almost a no-brainer. Every Cubs fan knew it from watching Theriot for years -- throw him a fastball up, and he would likely have struck out. Instead, Marmol threw another slider; Theriot laced it into the left field corner, tying the game. In the 10th inning, Albert Pujols won the game for the Cardinals with a walkoff homer off Rodrigo Lopez, the second straight game Pujols had won in that fashion.

Fast-forward to September 24, also at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals began the day three games behind the Braves for the wild card with five games remaining, fighting for their playoff lives.

And once again, the Cubs took a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth, having scored a run in the first inning. Lopez started for the Cubs and gave them six scoreless innings; Kyle Lohse and three St. Louis relievers allowed the Cubs just one run.

In came Marmol to save it; between June and September he'd been temporarily removed as Cubs closer, and had nine blown saves coming into the game, leading the major leagues in that category.

A one-out single by Matt Holliday put the tying run on base; Tyler Greene ran for him and stole second. A throwing error by Geovany Soto put Greene on third while David Freese was batting. Marmol put himself and the Cubs within one out of victory by striking Freese out.

And then Marmol completely lost command. He issued three straight walks, tying the game. Two of the walks were on 3-2 pitches, both times putting the Cubs again one strike from a win, as they had been in the June game.

With the bases still loaded, Rafael Furcal came to the plate. He didn't have a chance to win the game; Marmol's second pitch to Furcal bounced in the dirt, away from Soto, and pinch-runner Adron Chambers raced home with the winning run.

Two games, both winnable for the Cubs, both essentially given to the Cardinals by Carlos Marmol. If Marmol does what most closers do and puts those games away, the Cardinals are sitting home this October and the Braves are in the playoffs.

So maybe St. Louis thinks about sending a partial playoff share to Marmol. Or a small replica of the World Series trophy, if they win. Or at least a "Thank you" greeting card. The moral of the story is that games and seasons can easily turn on one at-bat or even one pitch. The Cardinals have had a fine season and have played well in October.

But if not for two memorable Carlos Marmol meltdowns, there might not have been October baseball in St. Louis at all.

It’s just pointless to look at those two games as more or less important than any of the other games the Cardinals played this season. The Cards blew about 42354354 saves at the beginning of the season. They blew a five or six run lead to the Mets in the stretch run. Those things happen in baseball with 162 games.

The point is a story can be written about any of them since you got in by the skin of your teeth.

Marmol happened to blow 2 of them. Also Cubs the managing also helped you into the playoffs.

Its a legit story.

In that case, I’ll stay tuned for the next instalment, possibly about the Cardinals’ 3-1 win over the Padres on May 23rd, or maybe the 7-6 win over the D-Backs on July 9. Without them, the Cardinals would be watching the playoffs from home! Legit stories all around!

There you go....

I am sure the same reliever had a meltdown in both of those games to make it the same thing.

As Cubs fans, all we ask is some token recognition...

…of the gift-wrapped pass to the playoffs you received from Marmol on September 24th. Face it, unless something special happens in the World Series, any impartial call in a Budweiser/Cards Turning Point of the Season contest has to rest on Carlos’ defibrillation routine, twice administered to a Cards team ready to flatline.

These were indeed special moments, maybe not enough to warrant a partial WS share for Marmol, but at least worth passing mention on this page and, perhaps, a few words of thanks from Cards fans.

Typical C

Typical Cubs fan. 103 years of futility and you have to take out your frustration on those pesky Cardinals. Oh wait pesky is a term you use for teams that never win but cause lots of problems for other teams. Your team lost more games than the Pirates and you think Marmol is the reason for the Cardinals making the playoffs. At least Atlanta was in the race before they fell apart, something that, after about week three you couldn’t say about the eternally hapless Cubs. The Cards raced down the stretch, never giving up. When did the Cubs start giving up? I would have to say that started happening around June 5th, the infamous day Yelon wantas us to thank Marmol for. I will say thank you to the Cubs for perrennially being one less team to worry about in the division.

That's a pretty self-serving way of looking at it.

We could also credit Tim Collins of the Royals for the Cardinals making the World Series.

Well.

The Cubs ARE in the news these days with the Theo Epstein thing.

This was about the Cardinals, too.

Apparently you don't realize I intentionally ignored your comment

because you have nothing valuable to add to the conversation, outside of trolling. Every cubs loss was a team loss, and pinning it on one player is usually pretty small minded.
Maybe the cubs should’ve scored more runs. Maybe Quade should’ve put in a different pitcher. Maybe Colby Rasmus should’ve converted to starting pitching when he was in high school, and the cubs could’ve drafted him and used him as a new breed of super-ace to make up the 19 game difference between the cubs and the cardinals.
Marmol didn’t help the cardinals into the playoffs, the cardinals beat the cubs. If you’d like to pin it on someone you can, but I don’t see what that does for you at this point.

I have written plenty of things NOT about the Cubs for this site.

I’d think you would agree the Epstein story is worth writing about.

So you really only have an issue with this one piece, which was written half in jest.

So are these Cardinal fans who just have to still try to stick it to Cub fans?

Al, I have to say this is even more fun than fencing with Cub fans….LOL

I guess so.

Glad you’re having fun.

This was clearly written as a joke, but with one point:

The moral of the story is that games and seasons can easily turn on one at-bat or even one pitch.

A new crowd of stuffy people...Its hilarious....

It is of course a joke, but Cardinal fans seem to get their underwear in a knot when bringing up the Cubs….

Hey Cardinal fans! You won! I am thrilled for you. I actually hope you win the Series and I am a Cub fan! I DO NOT like the Brewers, glad you took them out!

But that said…..Joke or not, you needed the Cubs being as bad as they are to get into the postseason….If you don’t like that….too bad…..

Thats right if it was not for them!

Plus the Rangers got into the playoffs on the last day of the season. Overcame a 10 1/2 game hole in August and had the same relieve blow it everytime…

Wait…..that didnt happen to the Rangers….SO ITS NOT THE SAME…

Al

oua re really stretching to write with this. Seriously, every team has blown saves, so to try and pin the Cardinals post season on the Cubs woes is comical.

Somebody gets it

All the article is saying is that the Cubs had 2 chances to win games against the Cardinals, thus theoretically preventing them from making the postseason, and they Bleed Cubbie Blue it. Would they still have made it without the blown saves? We will never know. But the magnitude of the blown saves is worth mentioning.

Craig Kimbrel

Blew 2 saves and recorded a loss in 3 games against the Cardinals in 2011. And he was a member of the team that blew a 9.5 game wild card lead to the Cardinals.

by Michael White on Oct 17, 2011 4:52 PM EDT reply actions

It's not just about blowing two saves

It’s the way they were blown. In the first game, it was obvious what Marmol needed to throw, but he threw something else and lost. But, much worse, was when he walked three straight batters to load the bases and force in a run, tying the game, and then uncorking a wild pitch to end the game.

Sometimes you just get beat. But other times, you melt down and give over the game. The same guy did it twice against the Cardinals, who went to the playoffs with a one-game margin. Even if the first game happened, the Theriot single, the second one didn’t have to. That was literally a gift of a game. If Marmol does his job, then all else being equal, St Louis is in game 163 to get the right to face Philly.

I don't like the side narrative that has emerged

which claims the Cardinals somehow did not deserve to make the playoffs, that it was handed to them.

They won 90 games this year which is way more than we were ever going to win. Fortunately for them that was enough to make the playoffs. They have been the best NL team since that time and deserve their place in the WS.

I know this is all meant to be in jest, but its poor class to detract from their efforts.

The real lesson is the Cubs have to do better in 162 of their games, not just one excruciating night at Busch.

"Keep pushin' til' it's understood. And these badlands start treating us good."

The only non-Cardinal that deserves a WS share....

…is Colby Rasmus’ dad. If he had been like a normal father instead of the worst stage parent since JonBenet Ramsey’s folks, then Rasmus would have been allowed to work through his issues and put up a 37 OPS+ after the trade deadline like he did for the Blue Jays, and the Cards would have been stuck with their sucky bullpen and not have Edwin Jackson, Octavio Dotel, and Marc Rzepczynski.
